Phipps Stable's Smuggler gave Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey his first win in the Mother Goose (gr. I) when the 3-year-old filly turned in a well-measured neck victory over Spun Sugar at Belmont Park Saturday. The Mother Goose, which was worth $300,000, is one of the few grade I races in New York that McGaughey had not won, a curiousity considering all the top 3-year-old fillies that he has saddled for the Phipps family over the years. The late-developing Smuggler won her first graded stakes race. |

The president of the New York Racing Association promised widespread change Monday to an organization facing audits, state investigations and accusations of bad management. "There's a lot of things that need to change," said Charles Hayward, president and chief executive officer of the organization that runs the Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont tracks. "NYRA management is showing it's serious about change." |

 ELMONT, N.Y. - Ordinarily, when the winners of the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks and Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan meet for the first time, handicappers would be inclined to give the advantage to the Oaks winner.
But when Kentucky Oaks winner Summerly hooks up with Black-Eyed Susan winner Spun Sugar in Saturday's Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park, handicappers may want to think twice before giving Summerly the edge. A total of six 3-year-old fillies were entered for the $300,000 Mother Goose, a one-turn race run at 1 1/8 miles. |

Hurricane Run's late push proved to be more than enough to win the $1.5 million Irish Derby (Ire-I) at The Curragh on Sunday.
The 4-5 French favorite, trained by Andre Fabre and ridden by Kieren Fallon, beat Scorpion by a half-length in the 1 1/2-mile race. Shalapour was third. |
