Churchill Downs concluded its 21-day meet on Saturday, the first meet since the track's $121 million renovation and the first since 2002 that was not limited by construction. Gains in both on-track and total wagering were reported as well as increases in on-track attendance. Additionally, average daily wagering from all sources topped $8 million for the first time in Fall Meet history. |

With odds of 50-1, most people didn't expect Giacomo to do much of anything in the 2005 Kentucky Derby. But after what's often been called the most exciting two minutes in sports. Giacomo emerged as the winner in the Run for the Roses.
After a strong third-place showing in the Derby, the colt Afleet Alex was considered a favorite in the Preakness. The horse turned up the speed, nearly fell over, then hung on to blow away the competition. |

Racing Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens has scheduled a press conference for Friday at Churchill Downs where he is expected to announce his retirement from racing. Craig O’Bryan, agent for Stevens, confirmed that the three-time Kentucky Derby (G1) winner planned to have a press conference about his career on Friday but wanted to wait until that time for further comment. |
