Retired Irish trainer Seamus McGrath, who in 1969 saddled Levmoss to victories in the Ascot Gold Cup, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and Prix du Cadran, has died at age 83. Levmoss, a son of Le Levanstell, earned Horse of the Year honors in France after his sterling 1969 season. |

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Smoke Smoke Smoke held off British Attitude to take a three-quarter length victory in the featured $72,600 overnight handicap for 3-year-olds at Churchill Downs on Sunday.
The win was the fourth this season in seven starts for Smoke Smoke Smoke, who was ridden by Robby Albarado. |

PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) -- California plans to test the use of microchips in identifying thoroughbred racehorses in the state.
It would cost $40-$50 per horse to implant the rice-sized chip into a neck ligament in a five-minute procedure by a veterinarian, said Dan Fick of the Jockey Club.
The chips contain a seven-digit facility location number and a 15-digit ID for each horse, and can also indicate a horse's temperature. The devices that read the IDs cost $200-$400 each. |

When the proven class of the field is also the fastest horse in the race, and by a lot, the combination proves virtually unbeatable. Botanical is the 6-5 morning line favorite to win Thursday's sprint feature. He figures to be a lot less by post time and that assessment seems justified. |
