At last, an interesting feature, a filly and mare turf allowances at 10 furlongs--if, that is, the scattered strong storms predicted don't materialize. That seems unlikely, especially given today's twilight program begins at 3 p.m., increasing the chances that the feature might be taken off the grass. We'll look at the race both ways.
On turf, we're taking two at the top spot and each affords an opportunity for value. Gijima (5-2 morning line second choice) makes her 4-year-old debut for Michael Dickinson, an off of the layup as most of you know. Still, layoff horses always offer value to some degree. As a 3-year-old last season, Gijima ran her best race on this course, at this distance, and over wet turf, running as fast as most of these at a younger age, impressive stuff. John Velazquez rides.
Meanwhile, the Bill Mott barn is having a strong year. In She's Sterling (6-1), we have an improving 4-year-old that never has taken a backward step on turf, also has run her best at 10 furlongs on a wet Belmont turf course at 3 and draws the pole today with J. D. Bailey. The fact she's a tad slower than some of these provides an excellent chance for value. We'll take it. Christophe Clement's morning line favorite at 2-1, Fastidia, is not easily eliminated.
THE PLAY: Exacta part wheel of Gijima and She's Sterling first with Gijima, She's Sterling and Fastidia for second, an extra ticket with Gijima first. Betting She's Sterling to win at 4-1 or greater. If this race is re-scheduled to the main track, strongly consider Devine Will (6-5), the fastest on dirt, and Grand Gala (6-1), coming off a new pace top winning her last in Monmouth slop for the hot Shug McGaughey barn. |
