The veterinary clinic that treated Barbaro will receive an award this month for its efforts to save the life of the 2006 Derby winner. The New Bolton Center will receive the Silver Horseshoe Award, an honor bestowed by the Kentucky Derby Festival to a group or individual for significant contributions or service to the thoroughbred racing industry.
A $1,000 gift usually accompanies the honor, but this year a special $10,000 award will be presented to the center. The money is a gift from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation, the charitable arm of the festival, said spokesman Mark Shallcross. Barbaro spent eight months battling for his life after breaking his right hind leg during the Preakness Stakes on May 20. The battle, however, came to an end in January, when Barbaro was euthanatized at New Bolton Center outside of Philadelphia after developing problems in both hind legs following months of rehabilitation. Barbaro received an outpouring of support following his injury at the Preakness. People from all over the world--including fans at Churchill Downs--showered the New Bolton Clinic with flowers, food and cards in the months after Barbaro was injured. The owners of Barbaro, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, have started a $3 million endowment named for Richardson at the University of Pennsylvania's veterinary school to study equine diseases.
